Planting Green Paths
About Planting Green Paths

Planting Green Paths is Shakes Travel's way of giving back to the environment by supporting and advocating for the conservation of forests found in and around Uganda's tourism destinations.
These forests are habitats for wildlife species that help balance ecosystems and make many destinations worth visiting. When nearby communities depend on forest encroachment or deforestation for survival, both livelihoods and wildlife landscapes become vulnerable.
Our role is to work with communities, existing organizations, and conservation agencies to encourage a different path: protecting forests, planting trees, and supporting alternative income-generating activities that reduce pressure on forest resources.
How the Approach Helps
- ✓Advocates for forest conservation in tourism landscapes that support wildlife and ecosystem balance.
- ✓Encourages communities near forests to shift from encroachment toward stewardship and tree planting.
- ✓Supports alternative livelihood ideas that help families earn without depending on deforestation.
- ✓Connects tourism, local communities, conservation agencies, and existing organizations around one practical cause.
- ✓Promotes tree planting, aftercare, and survival-focused restoration instead of one-off planting events.
Challenges We Respond To
- •Forest encroachment by communities seeking daily livelihood support.
- •Deforestation around habitats that shelter wildlife and protect ecosystem balance.
- •Limited income alternatives for families settled near forests and tourism destinations.
- •Mindsets that view forests mainly as survival resources rather than shared natural assets.
- •Loss of forest cover that weakens wildlife attractions, soil health, climate resilience, and destination beauty.
Our First Project: Mabira-Kalagala Pilot
Our first collaboration with FOSCOD focuses on the Mabira-Kalagala area as a community-led agroecology, forest restoration, and livelihood-support pilot.
The work supports communities neighboring Mabira Forest through tree planting, farmer organization, nursery systems, school-based environmental engagement, and economically useful tree-based farming such as coffee-centered agroforestry.
Shakes Travel supports the tourism linkage, visibility, and partner mobilization, while FOSCOD anchors local implementation so the project strengthens what already exists in the community.

Our Objectives

Forest Conservation Advocacy
Advocate for the protection of forests in tourism destinations where wildlife habitats, ecosystems, and community life are closely connected.

Community Mindset Change
Work with communities near forests to shift from encroachment and deforestation toward conservation, stewardship, and tree planting.

Alternative Livelihoods
Support practical income-generating activities such as nursery work and agroforestry so families can earn while reducing pressure on forests.

Partner-Led Restoration
Collaborate with existing organizations, conservation agencies, schools, and local groups so restoration is community-led and accountable.
The Cause & Our Impact

The Cause
Many forests around Uganda's tourism destinations are under pressure from deforestation, farming expansion, and livelihood needs among nearby communities.
Planting Green Paths responds by promoting conservation as a shared benefit: forests remain protected, wildlife habitats are strengthened, and communities gain better alternatives for sustaining their families.

Our Impact
Supporting Tree Planting
We advocate for planting more trees near forests and tourism landscapes, with attention to aftercare and long-term survival.
Encouraging Livelihood Alternatives
We support community ideas that can create income without depending on forest encroachment or deforestation.
Protecting Wildlife Habitats
Forest conservation helps protect the wildlife habitats and ecosystem balance that make Uganda special to travelers.
Building Collaboration
Our approach works through local communities, existing organizations, and conservation agencies rather than replacing what is already active on the ground.
